Cash 4 Gold Is A SCAM???

Monday, March 23, 2009 - 3:15 PM

Shocking right? As silly as their commercials are unfortunately there are a ton of people who fall for the gimmick and send in their jewelry, only to be totally disappointed when their check finally arrives.

I found this article today on ShoeMoney.com where someone claiming to be an ex-employee talks about the entire operation.

It didn't surprise me at all that they were burning people on the value of their jewelry, but what did surprise me is by how much. Pretty ballsy operation (assuming of course that the claims made are true).

I still find it strange that these sort of companies are able to continue doing business. I guess they aren't breaking any laws and if their agreement is strong enough, there is no real action that can be taken against them.

So on second thought, maybe you should hold on to that class ring for a while...

The White House: A New Blog To Add To Your RSS Reader

Tuesday, January 20, 2009 - 11:33 AM

Today at 12PM EST, our new president Barack Obama was sworn into office. Truly an amazing day.

President Obama has long been a champion of social media and internet technology (or just technology in general) and now the WhiteHouse website has a new feature... A blog!

There are already 5 entries in the blog (obviously prepared in advance) but that is a good start!

Be interesting to see how often this is updated and how transparent this administration will be. The promise of real transparency has been made along the campaign and so far it sure seems like that will be the case. I hope so.

Add the blog's RSS feed to your reader and stay up to date.

The Deed Is Done

Tuesday, November 4, 2008 - 5:24 PM

Well, I went and voted about an hour ago. I was surprised by how quickly I was able to vote and go. I was a little worried actually about low turn out but the volunteers told me there was a huge rush for most of the morning.

Here is a goofy picture of me after the vote. My wife took it with an iPhone so..

I hope you voted too (assuming you're American, of age, and eligible). Now I'll be glued to the news to watch the results.

Oh The Politics...

Wednesday, October 15, 2008 - 3:16 PM

No doubt that this is an extremely sensitive presidential race in the US this time around. No, I'm not going to write a long post about who I'm endorsing and why. Normally it's not smart to talk politics and religion with friends because it always leads to arguments.

Today I actually was so pissed off at a post on a blog, which I won't mention here, that compared the 2 candidates that I simply unsubscribed and left a comment calling the author an idiot. Obviously the post disagreed with my feelings on the subject but that's not why I called him an idiot.

The post basically used hate and fear tactics to try and scare it's readership into voting for their preferred candidate. I don't mind a post with actual facts that back up your rationale for who you plan on voting for. This post however had no such facts. The odd part is, the blog was an internet marketing related blog and not a political one. From the majority of the comments left on the post it looks like I wasn't the only one to abandon ship.

This got me thinking of how passionate people are about this election. So passionate that they are willing to flat out lie and try to scare people into seeing things their way. It's pretty sad that we are where we are as a country today.

To top it off, it looks like one of my favorite blogs (Donklephant) was hacked today. Not the first time I don't think, but it's a pretty bad time for this to happen. This is one of the most balanced political blogs I can find. Authors express views from the left, middle and right and while the editor is obviously biased towards the left he has never stopped worthy posts from being published (as far as I know anyways).

While I don't think either candidate is the best for the job there is one that I am absolutely 100% voting for. Here's a hint, around 57% of the country agrees with me. You should be able to figure that one out.

Enjoy the debates tonight.

Oh yea.. GO DODGERS!!!

Sept. 11th, 7 Year Anniversary

Thursday, September 11, 2008 - 12 PM

Today is the 7 year anniversary of the 9-11 attacks. Obviously this is a day in history that everyone will remember forever. One day that brings back a lot of emotions in a lot of people. Especially the people of New York.

Over a year ago I wrote a post about a strange prediction I had on September 10th, 2001. Sort of eerie post and I give links to the actual prediction from 2001 on LiveJournal. Maybe it isn't a prediction, but more of a "feeling". Anyways, it's sort of strange.

My daughters will be attending a "Patriot Day" Parade here in SoCal tonight (I will probably miss this because I am buried in work). It's important to my wife and I to make sure our kids know about the tragedy and that they respect the date.

Let's not forget about the people serving in our military. We all don't agree on the current war but I'm sure everyone can agree that the people fighting it are brave and selfless. I really appreciate their sacrifice!

Django 1.0 Released!!

Thursday, September 4, 2008 - 9:46 AM

Wow, Django has finally released version 1.0 of it's framework. I've been using Django for around 18 months now and have written about it many times in the past. There have many so many improvements to the framework since I started using it. If you want to create a powerful website quickly, Django is such an awesome framework to build from. Since it's pure Python it makes writing fast code such a breeze.

Anyways, I just wanted to say congrats to the entire Django team and user base. This is a big milestone for all of us.

Why Earthquakes Are Fun

Tuesday, July 29, 2008 - 1:10 PM

So we just had a decent earthquake (5.8 downgraded to 5.4) here in Los Angeles area. I've lived in So. Cal for most of my life and as a result, I've been through plenty of quakes. The scariest one I can remember is the Northridge quake of 1994.

Normally I would say there is nothing "fun" about an earthquake, but since so many people move to LA every year, when a quake hits it's usually the first they've experienced. Watching them freak out can be pretty entertaining. I wish I had a video camera to catch some of this excitement for youtube.

Strange thing just happened.. As I was typing this post my 5 year daughter called me. She is out of state with her sister visiting grandparents. Well she was absolutely hysterical. After I calmed her down she explained to me that she really thought I was dead from the earthquake.

Maybe this isn't so fun after all. I can't help but laugh at all the "LA imports" but hearing her voice call for me and cry that she thought I was dead really shook me up...

JohnChow.com Reviews SmartJabber, Corrections Needed

Wednesday, April 16, 2008 - 12:12 PM

As you know, I recently announced the launch of of SmartJabber. This is one of the new companies I have been working on the last several months. To help spread the word we ordered a paid review from JohnChow.com. We weren't quite sure what to expect because the review would be an honest one, regardless of the fact that it is a paid review. I am totally cool with that and I wouldn't expect, or accept, anything less.

When we ordered the review we assumed we would be contacted for a free account so the reviewer would be able to fully use the service and get a real feeling for it, how it works, the pros and cons, etc. Well we never got the request for the test account and today I noticed the review had been posted last night (click here to read).

There is some constructive criticism, which I find extremely helpful. However there are some points made in the review that are flat out wrong. The following was taken from the review itself:

This agent then poses a question of your choosing, possibly offering the customer a discount so that they will follow through on the sale. The thing is that this agent doesn’t really exist. They’re nothing more than a photo and an automated script. This is not a true instant messenger in any sense of the word, because the faux agent isn’t really responding to anything that the customer is typing.

This is totally incorrect. The agent responses are completely customizable and tailored to match the users input based on your own keyword/response settings. There is no limit to how many keyword(s)/responses you can use (and each response supports multiple keywords) so you can make your agents seem as real as possible. When a user asks a question that doesn't have a programmed response, it is flagged and logged for your later review. You can then add a response to that question based on the keywords within it.

Because this is the heart and soul of our application, and with the size of JohnChow.com's readership, the fact that they got this wrong is really upsetting. The review appears to be a review of our main website, not the actual service itself. The true benefit was never relayed to the reader because the reviewer never had a chance to see the customer interface, which is where users are able to customize their campaigns based on agents, links, responses, etc.

The review also made no mention of the statistics tracking that we provide. We track everything from the number of interactions, the number of link clicks, the number of sales, CTR, which browsers convert better, etc. All of this is available in the customer control panel but since the reviewer never got to see this they had no idea.

Another issue the reviewer had was the cost. Here is what he had to say:

SmartJabber offers three pricing plans:

$49.95 a month for 3 campaigns
$79.95 a month for 10 campaigns
$199.95 a month for unlimited campaigns

I don’t know about you, but that sounds pretty expensive for what SmartJabber does. It’s also curious that there is no plan for a single campaign.

He has a valid point about the single campaign plan. I will look into adding that option immediately. While I understand that $49.95/mo is expensive for a web service, especially in today's "free" internet service culture. But when you look at the competition, we are a huge discount. None of our competitors (there are only one or two) offer a flat rate fee for their service. Our competitors charge on a per sale basis. Meaning for every sale their service saves for you, you are charged $10 (last we checked, it was $10 per sale). So if you save 50 sales a month, you are paying $500! Now saving 50 sales a month is being done routinely by us and some of our users. How many saved sales would it take for SmartJabber to pay for itself? That depends on your product & pricing but I am guessing not very many.

I am working on getting in touch with the folks over at JohnChow.com so they can (hopefully) offer a real review of our service. At least update their current review but I am afraid that will not improve the damage that the current review may have done. Oi...

Update: We went ahead and added a single campaign plan for $19.99/mo. In addition, we are going to offer a 60 day free trial to the public. If you want to take advantage of that, click here!

Groovr Got Fancy!

Monday, February 18, 2008 - 4:48 PM

For a while I worked at a new startup here in LA called Groovr. I resigned earlier this year from Groovr but still keep in touch with the guys & gals over there. Today they launched the latest version of the website. It's been about 5 months since the last release and the features they implemented are really cool!

So what's new?

New Design - As much as I loved the last design when we rolled it out 5 months back, this new one definitely takes the cake. It is very "cool" and flows very well for the type of site that Groovr is.

Localized Explore - You can now "explore" your local area. See who is currently near by, any new shouts/photos/videos they may have submitted. All of it plotted out on a nice map so you can see how close someone may be to you. For an example, check out the Los Angeles explore page.

Feeds - No, not your standard RSS feed. Now data from a user is grouped into an "activity feed." You can see the latest shouts, images, videos, etc. all in one feed, along with comments.

Lightbox - You can now browse a users photo submissions via a lightbox display. This makes it much faster to see all the images on a single page.

Custom Profiles - Users can now customize their profile pages by choosing from an array of different background images.

Friend Importer - Pretty standard across most social networks, but they added a nice friend importer. Let's you invite/find friends from your address book (GMail, Yahoo, etc.)

There are other new things as well, but they are mostly changes behind the scene that the users won't "see" but they really improve the service. All in all, I think the site looks great and I wish them all the success in the world.

If you decide to give Groovr a try, make sure and add me as a friend. My profile is found here.

Dealing With Business Emergencies

Friday, February 15, 2008 - 1:04 PM

Fun morning for me today. I use Amazon S3 service for storage of various files, including the static media for most of my websites. This morning there was a major outage across the AWS farm. After noticing the errors I began to scramble to figure out what was going on. Obviously the issue was on the remote side (Amazon) so I had to sit and wait it out.

The outage seemed to last about 3 hours (for me, others are still reporting issues.) While S3 is an awesome service and very affordable, this shows that nothing is fail proof. Even with this outage, their service falls into their 99.9% SLA.

These things happen

I've spent a lot of time on the other side of this fence. Trying to figure out what is causing a major outage, dealing with pissed users and keeping the bosses away long enough to get my job done. I understand that "these things happen," but how do you convey that to your customer who's service is effected as a result?

It's also difficult to accept when you are losing money as a result of an outage such as this. Luckily I keep backups of all my sites so if I needed to I could upload the static content and change the templates to reflect that. But that is a lot of work and money will still be lost during the down time.

How to deal?

There really is no need for huffing and puffing in the beginning. Especially since the service is still operating under their 99.9% uptime SLA. Once it begins operating outside of that SLA, is when the yelling may start. Obviously the situation will be different for everyone. There are a lot of startups who depend on Amazon AWS services right now.

You have to make a rational decision when is it time to quit the service. Do you have a back up plan? If not, you should. If your history with the service in question is a very positive one, then forgive them for their "bad" and continue on. If they have a bad or unstable history then look into an alternative and take your business else where.

A lot of times switching companies/services is easier said than done. It will probably come down to which scenario loses more money. Putting up with the bad service or the amount of man hours required to switch. In the long run, it's almost always smarter to dump the bad service.

In the case of Amazon, I've been very happy with their service and this outage today wasn't that big of an issue though I'm sure many would disagree.

Superbowl 42

Monday, February 4, 2008 - 7:15 PM

Superbowl Sunday came and went. What an amazing game it turned out to be. I personally had no stake in the winner and I didn't bet anything on this game. Either way it went, it made for a great story and a shining moment in NFL history.

Patriots win and they secure a perfect season; done only once before. Of course they were heavy favorites coming into the game. The point spread 2 weeks ago was 13 points!

Giants win and it may be the biggest upset in NFL history. This is a great underdog story and is a source of motivation.

Obviously by now everyone knows the Giants pulled it off with their 17-14 victory. FoundRead had an interesting article using the quotes Eli Manning (Giants quarterback) gave after the win. The post applies his comments to modern day business and how: "Sometimes it takes a slightly larger challenge to draw the high performance out of you." This is very true!

Of course, the commercials were a big source of discussion as well. Pretty lame commercials this year in general (imho) but there were a few that stood out to me. My favorite was the Godfather spoof commercial for the Audi R8. Mainly because I am a huge Godfather fan but I did find the commercial funny; regardless of the unoriginality of the premise. Using Moe Green as the actor didn't hurt either. Jason Calacanis graded the commercials as well and agrees with me on this one.

The game itself was so well played that I was glued to the couch the entire time. OK, part of that was because I had a very late night on Saturday and didn't have the energy to do anything but sit around and watch TV. Oi.

How Safe Is Your Day Job?

Sunday, January 20, 2008 - 2:03 PM

I was reading TechCrunch and found this post about Yahoo cutting it's workforce by 20%. It references this article from Silicon Alley Insider, which has written an updated story and things do not look good.

I have a friend who works for Yahoo in the Burbank offices and he says that those rumors began floating last week. He isn't too concerned about his specific department, but worried about the direction the company may be heading.

I've been in corporate gigs before where layoff's were rumored and eventually occurred. I'll never forget that uneasy feeling; wondering if myself or a team member was going to be cut. Morale was low and the environment sucked! I ended up leaving that company because things just continued to get worse and worse.

Another job later I decided that that was it for me in the cubicle world. I bounced around doing consulting gigs for a while then took at job with a startup. It was a much more enjoyable environment and I felt more productive because of it. Still, I felt it wasn't a good match. I wrote earlier this month about how I plan to make this a life changing year and I am still on track for that goal.

Being your own boss is quite a feeling. Sure I could spend the day lounging and still make enough to cover my monthly bills, but then I would come no where near my goal for 2008. This means that I am working longer days than normal and getting home later than I would like but sacrifices are required for anything worth while.

This Yahoo trouble is just another reminder that you are not necessarily more secure at a 9-to-5. I am not saying to go out and quit your job but you should weigh your options and make a rational decision about how you can improve your "working" life. An improvement there will usually be a positive factor in other aspects of your life as well.

P.S. This post is sort of a rambling. Probably shouldn't blog while watching the Chargers-Patriots game ;)

My Ears Were Burning

Tuesday, January 15, 2008 - 11:43 AM

I woke up this morning at about 3:15 AM when my oldest daughter came into my room complaining about her cough. She hasn't been feeling good so I had her come to sleep with my wife and I. I couldn't fall back asleep.

I laid there thinking about everything going on in my life right now. It's a very busy and exciting time for me. I lay awake for nearly 2 hours, just me and my thoughts. I've had a lot on my mind lately and I didn't realize that I had won a very prestigious award yesterday.

Chris Bloczynski had bestowed upon me the coveted "Fan of the Week" award!

I really was shocked to see my mug being shown in my Google Reader as I made my way through my daily RSS feeds this morning.

The picture that I use of me across the web is a funny one to me. I'm laid out on my buddies beat up couch at his bachelor pad. Stained carpets, mini fridge full of beer (in the living room) and 2 day old pizza in the oven. A real bachelor pad.

Anyways, thanks to Chris for the post about me. I'll have to see what else I can do to win more cool stuff!

No More MingleNow

Friday, December 7, 2007 - 9:43 AM

MingleNow is a social network built around the night life of major metropolitan cities. You can find events, view photos, etc. They usually have their photographers at the events snapping photos of the crowd and singling out the hottest chicks. You know, the usual. The difference was that their events were usually quality events. When I wanted to find something to do I would always check MingleNow to see what was going on that night. I always found something fun to do whether I was here in LA or in San Diego or Vegas...

Well, according to this post on the MingleNow blog they are shutting the service as of Jan. 7th, 2008. Yahoo recently purchased a company called Blue Lithium, which happened to own MingleNow. In the MingleNow post they sort of push you to use other services in place of MingleNow; All them owned by Yahoo.

Now I am all for business. I assume that Yahoo has a good reason to shut down MingleNow (again, assuming that this was Yahoo's decision). But the alternatives offered are not up to par with MingleNow.

For one, MingleNow has everything I was looking for in one place. Now they are suggesting I use Flickr, Upcoming and 123out.com; Are you kidding me?

I am willing to bet that most MingleNow users will not head over to those services for their nightlife adventures. Another service will pop up and take MingleNow's place at some point. Maybe sites like ClubPlanet will eat up it's user base.

It's also a good guess that maybe MingleNow just wasn't turning a profit. It's very possible that all their ideas didn't pan out and the "gods" decided it was time to pull the plug.

I don't know. I just felt like ranting about this. So long MingleNow, I'll miss ya.

No Country For Old Men - Review

Wednesday, November 14, 2007 - 9:50 AM

So last Saturday I went and saw the movie No Country For Old Men by the Cohen Brothers. It was in limited release and being in LA, it was obviously being shown here. Word was out on this movie and I didn't have an easy time getting tickets but I finally scored some for an 11pm showing. Movie was sold out but we got awesome seats, which means we stood in line for nearly an hour just to be seated. It was worth it.

The general premise is that a hunter stumbles upon the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong. Bodies (human and dog) everywhere, huge load of heroin in the back of a trunk and 2 million dollars in a brief case. The hunter, a fairly savvy Vietnam veteran, naturally took the money. He got off scott free when in the middle of the night, his conscious got the best of him. He decides to head back to the scene and it ends up being the worst decision of his life. It sets off a huge chase through out north west Texas and even Mexico.

The villain of the movie is a character named Anton Chigurh. This guy is a psychopathic killer who feels he needs to kill anyone who crosses him. Of course, he has no problem crossing people himself. Only when he crosses someone, he makes sure to kill them so they can't return for revenge. He's very cold, very smart and manages to stay a step ahead of the police while close on the heel of the hunter. I don't want to go too much into it because it's hard to do so without giving spoilers.

This movie was actually filmed in New Mexico, a place I called home for many years. I immediately spotted the locations in the city that were actually filmed in Albuquerque. It's funny, how well I actually know the city. Albuquerque is one of those "little but big" cities, but it's very easy to map the entire place in your head. Sorry, getting nostalgic. As much as I put down the city for being too slow or not enough to do, a part of me does miss it.

The ending of the movie did leave me with a lot of questions. I guess the story is wrapped up, but so much more is left for me to wonder about. Maybe this was on purpose because the next day I bought the book and I am reading it now hoping to find answers to my questions.

I definitely recommend the flick! A lot of violence, blood and coin flipping... Call it!

Let Osama Go?!?

Monday, October 29, 2007 - 2:09 PM

Ahhh, fresh from a weekend in Las Vegas, I had a whole lot of articles to read in my Google Reader... One of my favorite blogs, Donklephant, had an interesting post related to a Fox News story by Colonel David Hunt.

Apparently we had Osama Bin Laden in our lap and we let him and his convoy ride away. This was just 2 months ago! Now, I am not that political and don't pretend to know all the issues, etc. But can someone please explain this to me? Why was it smart to let him go? I have to believe, no matter how much I despise our current administration, that they didn't let him go without a very good strategic reason. Unfortunately, I am afraid that the exact opposite is the reason. They simply didn't pull the trigger. Oi...

AhCabron.com - Now Powered By Django!

Monday, October 8, 2007 - 8:52 AM

AhCabron is a very NSFW website that I have worked on and off on for years. The name "Ah Cabron" (spanish) basically translates into "You Ass!". I know the owner and am more than happy to help him out when I can. I have helped with engineering and development in the past and am sort of the "go to guy" when technical issues arise. Certainly I present a bill for my services; after all... we are not Communists. <insert laughter here> (Sorry, Godfather moment..)

Little history... The site started so people can upload images of their boyfriends/girlfriends and get feedback on their looks. It was originally run using the open source coppermine gallery software. It quickly turned into people uploading adult natured images and soon it was 99% adult only content being submitted. Not one to turn away perfectly good images, the owner kept up with it.

Soon he realized that coppermine was too limited for the changes he wanted to make. That's when I entered the picture. I originally wrote a brand new system from scratch using Python and Mod Python. It was a basic system using the mod_python.publisher, mod_python.psp system for templates and my own sql wrapper for database access. For about 2 years this software has been running the site and doing a great job. It has been a bit of a hit, as it pulls in over 8M page views per month which is respectable traffic.

The time had come how ever to take the site to the next level. For that, I knew I had to rebuild this thing from scratch. Since I am now a Django groupie, I of course rebuilt the software using it. In all I would say it took me about 13 hours total to rebuild this site or about 2 weeks giving time when I had it. Most of those 13 hours was spent writing data migration scripts from the old schema to the new Django model schema. With heavy use of generic views the site was put together extremely fast. I should mention that a lot of the back end code I reused from other projects I have worked on (ex: image processing, watermarks, Amazon S3 integration, etc).

As of now the new code is basically a replication of the old site. All the old features are there and I wanted to cut that over now and flush out any bugs before I continue with the list of new features that are coming down the pipe. Video, RSS Feeds on just about anything, full user profiles and slide shows are just a few of the features on my ToDo list.

Check out the site, and pass me some feedback!

Eerie Sept. 11 Prediction - Sort Of

Friday, September 28, 2007 - 6:01 PM

Everyone has heard the crazy tales about Sept. 11, 2001. Various predictions, stories and conspiracies are littered all over the net. Today, I found my own.

For whatever reason, I decided to login to my LiveJournal account that I had forgotten about a solid 3-4 years earlier. I was going through my posts and found this one.. Dated Sept. 10, 2001 at 8:54 PM..

bad feeling

Ive had this bad feeling for about 2 days now. I dont know how to explain it
its just a bad feelilng. Like an emptiness in my stomach, that gives me the
chills. Im not sick or anything, just a feeling like something bad is gonna
happen. Oh well, have to wait and see.

Weird thing happened today. The ARMY called me to get me to re-up. They
offered a bunch of stuff, but I am pretty sure they killed all chances of me
joining again by their lack of compasion for a family situation I had when
I was in AIT.

First, how creepy is it that I had that feeling. Second, how odd that the ARMY recruiter called me that day. I had already had my medical discharge and was eligible for re-inlistment with a doctors waver (I had hurt my knee while I was serving prior to this). The recruiter made a point to say "We need you. We need a lot of people right now. Some bad things are in the works". Disclosure: I am paraphrasing here, I don't remember his exact words but it was very similar to my quote. The gist of it was that the ARMY needed bodies to join up and previous experience was preferred. I wouldn't need to go through basic training or school again, just a few re-entry courses and off to a duty station. As it turned out, that station would have been Afghanistan and Iraq.

I had completely forgotten about this call until I found this old post today. I remember feeling like the government had to have known something in advance for this call to come in. I shrugged it off as coincidence and forgot about it.

Now I am not a huge conspiracy theorist, but I can't help but shake the feeling that the government knew it was happening and didn't stop it. It's crazy I know, but it's not impossible. I honestly believe the government (read: CIA) was behind, or involved, with the Oklahoma City bombing of 1995. What did I say about not being a huge conspiracy theorist? The reasoning behind letting the attacks occur? There are many motives and some are more far fetched then others. I won't get into that here because this post wasn't meant to bring all this up. Just a reminder about that eerie post I wrote to LiveJournal all those years ago.

Paris Hilton - World Class Idiot

Thursday, June 28, 2007 - 10:52 AM

Anyone else catch her Larry King Live interview? Neither did I. I just caught the snippets being passed around the web. Really, all I can say is.. Wow. Really though, need I say more?

The best was when Larry asked if she read the bible in jail. She said she read it daily. The following ensued:

Larry: What is your favorite verse?
Paris: Umm ... *sigh* ... hrmm ... Well ... I don't have a favorite.

Classic!
